Cheviot Community
Cheviot is the economic and social hub of a largely rural district of around 1,500 people and is administered by the Hurunui District Council. It is a safe and friendly village that supports an impressive variety of groups and organisations, sports and cultural facilities. Cheviot's community spirit far outweighs its physical size.
While predominately a rural community, its growing town centre and proximity to Gore Bay continues to attract new residents who appreciate Cheviot’s old fashioned community values.
Cheviot Area School takes students from new entrants through to Year 13 while two pre-schools take care of the under fives.
Alongside the town's shops and services are a medical centre, dedicated emergency services, rest home, three churches, a museum and an excellent public library.
While sheep, beef, and deer farming are the prevalent land use in the Cheviot district, viticulture is taking root along with traditional and alternative horticulture.

Whether you're on holiday, business or residing in beautiful Cheviot, if you've got aches and pains, stressed, or maybe have a more serious health complaint, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or Therapeutic Massage could be just what you need.
Massage and acupuncture are great to help you unwind, and calming organic oils are used during the relaxing, deep tissue and therapeutic massage.
TCM has been practiced for over 3000 years. By stimulating the body through a selected number of acu-points using fine needles, pressure or moxibustion, the body is encouraged back into a place of balance. Heidi (practitioner) has been practicing TCM and therapeutic massage in Cheviot and Kaikoura since 2003 and is an ACC treatment provider.

Refuse and Recycling
Recycling and refuse transfer station
Cheviot’s transfer station is on Mina Road. It is open between 10am and 1pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
It is possible to recycle glass bottles and jars, food and drink cans, newspapers, magazines, cardboard, plastic (both hard and film), untreated timber, gib board, hardfill, car batteries, green (garden) waste, scrap metal and white goods.
Apart from glass, car tyres, gas bottles, green waste and car batteries, all waste and recycling should be placed together into the compactors at the Councils transfer station. Hurunui District Council is in partnership with Becon in Christchurch to sort waste and recycling through their materials recovery facility (MRF), to achieve maximum diversion of material from landfill.
Directions on how to manage items which cannot be placed into the compactor, for sending to Becon, will be provided by the operator on site, or can be obtained through contacting the Council on 03 314 8816.
When recycling glass bottles and jars, they will need to be emptied from boxes and bags and all lids and caps will need to be removed, but there is no need to sort glass into individual colours. There is no charge to recycle glass bottles or jars through the transfer stations.
In addition, engine oil can also be recycled through the Amberley transfer station and empty (triple rinsed) agricultural chemical containers through the Culverden transfer station.
Refuse and Recycling
Cheviot householders are entitled to place up to two sacks of refuse out each week for collection. Refuse must be tied securely and left at the kerbside boundary of the property by 8am on the day of collection. Should there be more than two sacks put out, they will be stickered and not removed.
Refuse is collected in Cheviot and Gore Bay on Monday.
